Ingredients

  • 3 oz Tequila preferably blanco
  • 1 oz Orange liqueur such as Cointreau or triple sec
  • 1 oz Fresh lime juice about one lime
  • 1 g Activated charcoal powder food grade, use cautiously
  • 1 tsp Simple syrup optional, for slight sweetness
  • Salt for rimming Salt or black salt optional, for garnishing rim
  • Lime wedge Lime wedge for rimming glass

Equipment

  • Cocktail shaker
  • Strainer
  • Measuring jigger
  • Lime juicer
  • Rimming plate or shallow bowl
  • Lighter or small torch (optional)

Method

  1. Fill the cocktail shaker halfway with ice and add tequila, orange liqueur, lime juice, activated charcoal, and simple syrup if using.
  2. Cover the shaker tightly and shake vigorously for about 15 seconds until the mixture is well chilled and the charcoal is evenly dispersed, giving the drink a uniform deep black hue.
  3. Rim your glass with lime wedge and dip it into salt or black salt to coat the rim for extra flavor and visual impact.
  4. Strain the cocktail into the prepared glass using a strainer to remove ice and any sediment, resulting in a smooth, glossy surface.
  5. Garnish with a lime wedge on the rim, or float it on top for extra color.
  6. If desired, gently torch the lime wedge or the glass rim for an added smoky aroma, watching the lime oil shimmer as it chars slightly.
  7. Serve immediately and enjoy the mysterious, smoky allure of your Black Magic Margarita.

Notes

Ensure the activated charcoal is food grade and measured carefully to avoid gritty texture. Adjust sweetness with simple syrup to taste. For a more dramatic effect, lightly torch the lime garnish for enhanced smoky aroma.
